Leland (1824-1903) American writer, Princeton graduate, studied also at Heidelberg and Munich, active in New York and Philadelphia journalism, published books in a wide range of subjects, all written with ability and zest. He is remembered particularly for his translations of Heinrich Heine, for the humorous dialect poems collected in The Breitmann Ballads and his numerous works on gypsy lore and language. A genial giant of a man, he was interested to the end of his life in anything mysterious or occult.
