F 184 + (4) pages; printed double column, text in Italian after the dedication in Latin; Saint Philip Neri (1515-1595) founder; Born in Florence, Italy, educated by the Dominicans, lived an ascetic life in Rome for about 2 years, studied theology and began to speak with the people in the streets and market areas, during an especially corrupt time; St. Philip converted many of the common people, his own good nature and sense of humor serving him well. in 1548 he founded a group of laymen who worked in the hospitals, took care of convalescents and pilgrims, and spread the popularity of the Forty Hours' Devotion; he was ordained in 1551 and became widely known as a confessor, introduced the practice of informal spiritual conferences for his penitents; as his work increased, other priests aided him and became known as the Oratorians because they called the group to the oratory for prayer; the society of the Oratorians was formally approved in 1575 by Pope Gregory XIII, with Philip as superior; he astonished many with the rapture of his devotions and was canonized in 1622 (DCB); this book by Ricci containing commentary on the Saint's life involved with these worthies, divided into De'Compagni di S. Filippo: Giovenale Ancina Vescovo di Saluzzo, Cesare Cardinal Baronio, Alessandro Fedeli, Angelo Velli & others and a section of Fratelli Laici, Bernardino Corona, Gio: Battista Guerra, Battista Flores, more; some nice examples of head and tail-piece ornamentation by the printer-baskets of fruit, putti, woodcut initials, more; bound in full contemporary polished leather boards; four raised bands, some decorative gilt-work on spine; some wear and rubbing to covers. bottom of spine leather chipped away; previous owner drawings of ships on endpapers, amateur or childlike; some old pencilling on final endpaper, the odd foxing or stain; no first (blank) sheet; contents generally clean and in very good condition, fairly fresh, solid printing impression on quality paper; good condition overall.
