Cook's Life and Voyages. With A Narrative of the Discoveries of Previous and Subsequent Circumnavigations
(Anonymous)

Edinburgh: Printed for the Booksellers., 1843. viii + 437 pages; No publisher noted on title page, however with a two-page Thomas Nelson of Edinburgh publisher's list at back; with half-title page, a drawing of 'Kaneena A Chief of the Sandwich Islands' by J. Webber engraved by T. Cowan, an illustrated title page stating Voyages of Discovery Around the Globe with a depiction of 'When the Indian fell, all the Canoes put off to some distance' by A. Ritchie, also engraved by Cowan; followed by one blank and the regular title page and a short (4-page) preface, followed by engravings of Resolution Bay, View of Otaheite, A Sandwich Islander Dancing and a Native of New Caledonia throwing the Spear (on the same sheet) and an illustration of a Boxing Match at Hapai one of the Friendly Islands; (this illustration apparently different from others of the same name we have seen-this witha boat in the background on lagoon and in a more horizontal format, different details than others); the book describes all three of Cook's voyages and his death and includes the letters by the French government and the fledgling U.S. with Benjamin Franklin's appeal to safeguard Cook and his ships, regardless of the state of war between the U.S. and Britain at the time (his efforts didn't succeed with the American Government nor the Spanish; only the French decided to leave Cook alone if he should be found by their ships); illustrations printed on slightly heavier stock; 12mo (5 1/4" x 3 1/4") size; previous ownership name of "Leniko" 1888 and Souvenir 24 Dec 1846 Van G. Scheerman (?) N.Y. on endpapers; bound in contemporary dark green cloth, gilt decorated spine, still fairly bright; some edge, tips wear to binding, couple of closed edge-tears to illustrations, not obtrusive; overall, very good contition; a nicer copy than is often seen in the original cloth. Very Good H (Item ID: 13525)
