New York: 1838. Manuscript note, addressed to the Collector of the Port of N. York (Mr. Hoyt): to the 'Custom House Sept. 27' in which 'Wm. D. Porter, Lt. U.S.N. Inspector of the 4th District of Light Houses Beacons &c.' "...called agreable to the orders of the Secty of the Treasury, to obtain a Revenue Cutter to assist me in the duties of inspecting the Light Houses &c. as I wish to proceed at once upon the duties as given (?) me - I request that a cutter may be placed under my orders..."; docketed on the back, stating a brief of the same as above; Here, Lt. Porter has spelled the name "Hoit", correctly: Jesse Hoyt, Collector of the Port, who was found to be a defaulter to the Government in an amount exceeding two hundred thousand dollars and resigned the Collector's post, which he had attained in 1838. Hoyt was also a speculator and capitalist, with involvement in shipbuilding and other activities in the West, notably with Captain Stephen R. Kirby, whose son Frank Kirby went on to become the major steamship designer of the time; approximately 7" x 8"; old fold-line splits repaired by tape (on the verso only), with some subsequent showing-through on the face; good strong inking, a very legible hand; a good early Light House document; very good condition.
