Sepia-toned albumen photographic image, oval shape, image 5" x 6 1/2", overall size of mount 6 1/2" x 8 3/4" approx.; a French whaler named Roland is credited as rescuing victims of the burning wreck of "The India" off Rio de Janeiro in 1841, which was bound for Australia carrying Scottish immigrants; information at the 'Ship India' internet site gives Captain Olivier Le Cozannet as captain of the Roland, a Whaler of the South Sea Fishery, belonging to Havre de Grace; "Abdullah Freres Constantinople" oval blindstamp of the photographic studio at bottom of mount; at right in pencil in contemporary hand is "Le 'Roland' a Therapia 1861"; bottom left corner of mount creased, old crack, no loss to image, right side with crease at bottom as well; overall, good condition and an interesting image, worthy of more research.
