Aunt Judy's Story: A Tale From Real Life. Written for the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Fair.
(Thompson, Matilda G.)
Philadelphia: No. 31 N. Fifth: 1855. F 36 pages; front page woodcut illustration of a part of the story; no publisher stated on copyright page, but printed by Merrihew & Thompson, Printers. No. 2 and 4 Merchant St.; the Unversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on their website identifies the story's author as Matilda G. Thompson; from the University of Virginia website's article on reusing a novel's art in other publications comes the information that the sole illustration at front is by Hammatt Billings' (1818-1874), who had created this and other depictions of anti-slavery for the first illustrated edition of Uncle Tom's Cabin, the same illustrations being used in a collection of stories, for which Matilda G. Thompson had written two; evidently, here is the same picture being used as a frontispiece for this single-story edition; the OCLC search turned up only two entries; 4" x 6 1/4" size; original decoratively-blindstamped brown cloth, gilt cover titles; some edge, tips wear, spine ends chipped away; 1" damp-discoloration first few leaves, at gutter, not particularly obtrusive; a little bit of light foxing; generally, volume is clean and in very good condition, binding secure. Very Good H (Item ID: 12211)
