Left school at fourteen to work in father's machine shop; in 1887, took out first of some 200 patents granted him...Submitted hist first plans for a submarine in 1893...organized the Lake Torpedo Boat Company, 1900, and in 1902 at Bridgeport, Conn., launched his 'Protector', first of a new breed of submarines; they were equipped with hydroplanes fore and aft to achieve submergence while maintaining an even keel, and with an early form of the periscope.
